This Carnelian Agate tumbling rough features rich reds and oranges and takes on a brilliant polish. Stones are a mix of sizes from 1" to 2". Most are a blend of translucent solids, with a few exhibiting banding.

Carnelian has a hardness of 6 - 7 on the Mohs Scale. It is a variety of chalcedony which is a silica. Impurities of iron oxide give the stone its distinctive reddish brown color.

Our carnelian rough is from India, but it is also commonly found in Brazil Siberia and Germany.

The term "sard" is often used interchangeably with carnelian as they are very similar. However, sard is generally slightly harder and darker than Carnelian.

Carnelian has been used for thousands of years as a semi-precious gemstone and was commonly used in Roman times to make engranved signet rings.

For those interested in the healing properties of carnelian, it is believed to promote boldness and increase energy. Carnelian amulets are also often used in Feng Shui to give a home grounding energy.
